CHANNEL DISTRICT - The developer of a condominium tower in the Channel District has agreed to several conditions in exchange for the project's approval. The City Council last week approved the second phase of the Place at Channelside, a 33-story, 350-foot-tall project at Channelside Drive and Washington Street. As part of the rezoning, the developer, Key Developers Group, agreed to install pedestrian crosswalks connecting to the TECO streetcar, two murals, more than 15,000 square feet of retail space and free display cases for local artists. In addition, 16 of the 465 units will be reserved for working-class people. Units will range from $170,000 to more than $2-million. Zoning request will allow new Starbucks on GandyGANDY/SUN BAY SOUTH - Starbucks is coming to Gandy Boulevard. The City Council last week approved a zoning request allowing Starbucks to open a coffee shop in the Publix parking lot at Gandy near Himes Avenue. Plans call for an 1,800-square-foot coffee shop with a drive-through, bike racks and an outdoor patio. Ryan Canell, owner of the neighboring independent coffeehouse Jammin Java, presented the council with a petition signed by 306 opponents, but the rezoning motion passed 3-2.
