Alonso softball standout Nicole Rose, a second-team 2005 all-conference pick who plays first base for the Ravens, signed with South Florida Community College. Teammate Lisa Rozanski, a centerfielder and two-time all-conference selection, is headed to Daytona Beach Community College.
Both players started competing together on the same Town 'N Country youth squad eight years ago. Today, they not only play for Alonso but for the same travel squad, the Tampa Wildcats.
Chamberlain offensive lineman Chris Phillips has signed with Massachusetts Maritime Academy. A second team all-conference performer last season, Phillips was chosen to play in the county all-star game.
Michael Verbosky of East Bay has been named to the Florida High School Athletic Association Academic All-State Team. Verbosky carries a 3.98 grade point average and ranks second in a senior class of 456. He earned four varsity letters each in soccer and track, two for football and one each for cross country and swimming. He plans to attend the University of Florida and study medicine.
Verbosky was one of 24 student-athletes honored. Each receives $500 and a commemorative medallion. From that pool, two Scholar-Athletes of the Year (one boy and one girl) will be announced June 1. The winners receive an additional $2,500.
