TAMPA - For the Wharton boys and girls track teams, the real season begins when the region meets rolls around. But that doesn't mean the Wildcats don't enjoy district championships.

The Wharton boys and girls took their share of events Friday at Armwood as both squads cruised to Class 3A, District 10 titles. The Wharton boys, using wins in the field and relay events, totaled 159.50 points, 30 points ahead of Armwood. Brandon placed third (126), followed by Freedom (85).

The girls competition was not as close. Wharton took seven events to win by 591/2 over runnerup Armwood. The Brandon girls placed third, followed by Middleton.

The Region 3 meet is April 27 at Clearwater.

Wharton's Sadat Kahin won the 800-meter run and Erik Moser (pole vault) and Ryan Dixon (long jump) were the other individual champions for the Wildcats. Wharton's 4x800 boys relay team also captured first.

Freedom won five events. The Patriots were strong in the sprints as Eddie Davis won the 100 and Calvin Smith took the 200 and 400. Mikese Morse won the triple jump and the 4x400 relay team, anchored by Smith, easily won their event.

Host Armwood took the 4x100 relay and had an individual champion in Jay Lassiter in the 110 hurdles. Brandon's Orssie Bumpus captured titles at 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

The Wharton girls were dominant across the board.

Grace Jones won the high jump, Teona Rodgers the 100 hurdles and Jessica Forrester was hardly challenged in the 1,600 and 3,200. Also, Aequoia Diggs took the 100 and Wildcat relay teams won the 4x100 and 4x800.

For Armwood, winners were Arilicia Adkins in the 800 and Crystal Fierro in the pole vault plus the 4x400 relay.
