Driver in fatal drag race sought

By TIMES STAFF WRITER

The Florida Highway Patrol on Saturday continued investigating the Orange County street race that killed Citrus High School graduate Ian Morrill.

Trooper Kim Miller said her agency, based on witness accounts and other evidence, has grounds to arrest the driver of a white Subaru Impreza STI. Witnesses say that driver, whom investigators were still looking for Saturday morning, had an impromptu street race with Morrill early Friday that lasted more than 1 mile on State Road 528. Their speeds exceeded 100 mph.

Witnesses said that, as the vehicles approached a construction zone, the Subaru swerved in front of Morrill's car and hit the brakes. Morrill's Honda Civic smashed into a guard rail, killing him and injuring his passenger, fellow 2004 CHS graduate Robert Taylor.

A memorial at the wreck scene was expected to be held Saturday, the patrol said. Morrill, 20, was a student at Brevard Community College and played on the golf team. Taylor, 20, also attends the school and plays on the team. The men were returning to Brevard County from Inverness when the crash happened. Taylor's father, Mike, said Saturday afternoon that his son was out of the hospital and doing fine. The family's thoughts and prayers are with the Morrill family, he said.
