ST. PETERSBURG - The Green Thumb Festival, featuring horticulture exhibits, landscape seminars, conservation programs and free or low-cost plants, is Saturday and Sunday at Walter Fuller Park, 7891 26th Ave. N.

The festival runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

Other features include a plant diagnostic clinic, free mulch, the Garden Club of St. Petersburg Flower Show, a tool-sharpening clinic, grow and share programs, children's crafts, door prizes, food and entertainment.

Those interested in tool sharpening are reminded to bring their tools, and those wanting to have their soil and water tested should bring samples in clean containers.

'Night of Florida Poetry' free, open to the public

ST. PETERSBURG - Lovers of Florida poetry are invited to a special event starting at 7:30 tonight at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg.

The Florida Studies program's second annual "Night of Florida Poetry" will be in the courtyard between the Williams and Snell houses on Second Street S between Fifth and Sixth avenues.

Retired English professor Bob Hall will be master of ceremonies. Among poets scheduled to read are Peter Meinke and Helen Wallace.

The event is free and open to the public. Those who attend can read their own poetry or their favorite Florida poem.

Main Street initiative open house is Thursday

ST. PETERSBURG - The 22nd Street S Main Street initiative is holding an open house from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Main Street office, 1027 22nd St. S.

Those who want to learn about 22nd Street redevelopment or volunteer to help are welcome. The Main Street program will be explained, and current volunteers will be available to chat.

Enoch Davis Center will host Harris on Thursday

ST. PETERSBURG - County Commissioner Calvin Harris is the featured speaker at Thursday's 7 p.m. meeting of the African-American Voters Education and Research Committee at the Enoch Davis Center, 1111 18th Ave. S.

Harris will talk about the county's 10-year plan to end homelessness and the county's mass transit system.

The meeting is free and open to the public.
