ODESSA - The knife came from behind him, but Renel Victor might have seen the warning signs.

He called the Sheriff's Office twice within 61 minutes Monday night, warning deputies that his wife was behaving erratically. He asked authorities to take her away.

Twice the deputies passed through the black gates of Ivy Lakes Estates to check on the couple, and twice they left after she appeared nonthreatening in their presence.

Less than seven hours after the second call, a neighbor found Victor on her doorstep. He was lying in a pool of blood.

Authorities said his wife stabbed him six times in the back with a black-handled butcher knife.

Renel was at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa on Tuesday afternoon, listed in fair condition. His wife, Carole Alcime, 29, was held without bail at the Land O'Lakes jail on a charge of attempted murder. Victor's brother told police that she has a history of mental illness.

The stabbing took place in a quiet, walled community off State Road 54 just west of the Suncoast Parkway. Authorities said Victor was sitting on the edge of the bed about 5:30 a.m. when Alcime attacked him.

He staggered from their townhouse about 40 strides, past the low shrubs and pine bark in their tiny front yard and across the parking lot to a neighbor's.

Witnesses said the couple's 9-year-old son grabbed his baby brother and fled. The boy told police that his mother was yelling about demons.
