Officials say stubborn Brevard brush fire was set

ROCKLEDGE - A brush fire that consumed about 5,300 acres over three days in northern Brevard County was intentionally set, officials said Saturday.

The fire, which forced authorities to close Interstate 95 twice this past week, was burning near Port St. John on Saturday. Firefighters were spraying homes in the area and digging lines around the fire to contain it.

Florida Division of Forestry area supervisor Ron Weis said the fire "was intentionally set by somebody."

Brevard County Fire Rescue spokesman Orlando Dominguez said crews making an aerial survey of the fire on Thursday saw people leaving the scene on all-terrain vehicles.

About 100 firefighters fought the blaze, and helicopters dumped water on flames. Two structures, one a home, were damaged by the fire. No injuries have been reported other than minor scrapes for firefighters.

Nearby, along the Beachline Expressway, another fire has burned 3,000 acres. Officials are letting that one burn because there are no homes in the area.
