MAY CLASSIC: The Child Abuse Council and St. John Greek Orthodox Day School host the GunnAllen Financial May Classic 5k. The annual race drew more than 1,500 runners last year, and more than 2,000 are expected Saturday. ISRAEL INDEPENDENCE DAY: More than 3,000 people are expected to celebrate Israel's 58th year of independence at the 2006 Tampa Bay Israel Independence Day Community Festival in downtown Tampa. LYNYRD SKYNYRD: After performing under a variety of monikers, the group settled on Lynyrd Skynyrd, derived from the name of Leonard Skinner, a gym teacher at the members' high school in Jacksonville. In 1977, the band's private plane crashed in rural Mississippi, killing Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and seriously injuring other members. 'MAMMA MIA!': Got an ear for ABBA? If so, you'll probably enjoy Mamma Mia!, a musical featuring 22 ABBA songs. Set on a tiny mythical Greek island, the play follows Donna, a feisty, 40-something single mom who recalls distant memories of carefree days while her daughter paradoxically dreams of tradition, romance and a big white wedding. WE HARDLY KNEW YE? Celebrate the life and art of the late John M. Murphy, a longtime supporter of local arts and co-founder of Silver Meteor Gallery in Ybor City. Combining a gallery exhibition with elements of an Irish wake, the show will feature food, drinks, music and memories while showcasing selected drawings, photographs, paintings and sculptures by Murphy. The artwork will be on display through May 20. An opening reception will be from 7 to 11 p.m. Tuesday. BOB DYLAN: One of the most distinctive and poetic voices in the history of American pop music, Bob Dylan began writing poetry at the age of 10.
