CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Bo Van Pelt tied a course record and set the 36-hole record to lead the Wachovia Championship on Friday. His 8-under 64 put him at 10-under 134 for a three-shot lead over Jim Furyk.
Play was called due to thundershowers, and 74 players will finish this morning.
Van Pelt matched the 64 of Kirk Triplett in the first round of the inaugural event in 2003. He made one of only nine birdies at No.17, a 217-yard par 3 to a peninsula green. With the pin about five paces from the water, he hit a 5-iron to 6 feet. He added a sand save at 18.
Furyk, who shared the first-round lead, got to 9 under before bogeys at 16 and 17 to shoot 69. Rory Sabbatini, another first-round co-leader, shot 1-over 73 and was seven back. The other co-leaders, Bill Haas and Trevor Immelman, did not finish and were 1-under through eight and even through 15, respectively.
OGILVIE STOPPED: Joe Ogilvie was charged with driving while impaired in Charlotte, N.C. Police said Ogilvie, competing at the Wachovia Championship, was stopped for speeding early Wednesday morning. The officer smelled alcohol, and Ogilvie failed a sobriety test. A hearing date was not set.
LPGA: Angela Stanford shot 5-under 67 in the second round for a one-stroke lead over Patricia Meunier-Lebouc (66) and Sophie Gustafson (career-best 63) at the Franklin American Mortgage Championship in Franklin, Tenn. Stanford had five birdies, an eagle and two bogeys. Beth Bader, the first-round co-leader with Stanford, shot 75 and was eight back. Seminole's Brittany Lincicome shot 69 and was tied for 13th, six back. Tampa's Beth Bauer shot 76 and missed the cut.
CHAMPIONS TOUR: Scott Simpson, Tom McKnight, Keith Fergus and Mark McNulty shot 5-under 67 to share the first-round lead at the Regions Charity Classic in Hoover, Ala. Former major-league pitcher Rick Rhoden is tied at one back with Hale Irwin, Wayne Levi and Brad Bryant.
EUROPEAN PGA: David Drysdale shot 8-under 64 for the second-round lead at the Italian Open in Milan. Drysdale, who had nine birdies and a bogey, was at 13-under 131, two better than first-round leader Soren Kjeldsen (70), Phillip Archer (67), Benn Barham (68) and Francesco Molinari (65).
