Open an account, get free credit monitoring

By DAVE GUSSOW

Toasters are long gone as promotional come-ons for banks. Now, identity theft protection may be the draw.

SunTrust Banks is offering checking customers who maintain at least a $1,500 daily balance a free identity theft and credit monitoring service from Equifax.

Customers who sign up will have their credit rating monitored weekly, notification of suspect fraudulent activity, a credit report and ID theft insurance.

SunTrust claims to be the first bank to have such a service, which usually costs $49.95 a year directly from Equifax.

A poll commissioned by the bank found 48 percent of those surveyed think they are taking proper steps to protect their personal information.
