LECANTO - The Centers is one step closer to building a residential treatment center in Lecanto.
The Legislature has approved $1-million in the state budget for construction of the facility, which would house regional youths who are battling substance abuse and mental health problems, said Russell Rasco, director of the Centers.
Now the decision will go to Gov. Jeb Bush for final approval.
"We're excited and pleased," Rasco said. "But we do know the final leg is the governor's support. We believe he will sign off on it. The whole community is behind it."
The Centers, formerly known as Marion-Citrus Mental Health, had originally requested $1.8-million for the project. Rasco said the organization will raise funds to make up the difference.
Located near the Centers' current office in Lecanto, the new facility would house 15 beds for patients as young as 12. Those receiving treatment would stay up to six months, depending on their individual needs.
Residents would address both mental health and substance abuse problems, under the guidance of a counselor trained in both areas.
Sixty percent of adolescents who abuse substances have a another disorder, said Addie Rawls, clinical director of the Centers. But finding help for both problems under the same roof is a challenge.
"We desperately need this program," Rasco said.
