Current movies recommended by the Times:

1. United 93 - Writer-director Paul Greengrass revisits the Sept. 11, 2001, hijacking of an airliner by terrorists and the story of the passengers who rebelled. Tough to watch, but expertly conceived.

2. Akeelah and the Bee - An inner-city youth (Keke Palmer) aspires to become a National Spelling Bee finalist. Doug Atchison's movie is a champ.

3. Thank You for Smoking - A crafty tobacco lobbyist (Aaron Eckhart) is the fascinating antihero of Jason Reitman's sharply written satire.

4. Mission: Impossible III -Director J.J. Abrams injects life and clarity into the franchise, ensuring we'll have Tom Cruise to kick around a while longer.

5. The Sentinel - Michael Douglas plays a Secret Service agent on the run, suspected of plotting to assassinate a U.S. president.
