Design, fashion are all the rage

An expo and show Saturday will allow students to see the fruits of their creative labor.

Ffty fashion students will see their designs come to life on the catwalk during the International Academy of Design and Technology's 21st annual design expo and fashion show on Saturday.

The design expo will highlight portfolios by students in graphic design, recording arts, digital photography, computer animation, digital production and interior design. The school's digital movie production department will present several student-produced short films and documentaries.

The fashion show will feature 38 professional models strutting down the runway in more than 200 student-designed garments.

About 2,000 people are expected to attend the event at the Tampa Convention Center.

Nancy McGee, chairwoman of the academy's Fashion Design Department, credits the event's continued success to the public's fascination with clothes.

"We all wear them, and they represent so much of outwardly who we are," she said.

Being a clothing designer is difficult, competitive work, she said.

"It's not nearly as glamorous as the fashion show," McGee said. "The fashion show is the outward face, the end result of the hard work behind the scenes."

The fashion show will have seven scenes, including Structure and Linear. Structure will feature "fantasy inspired garments," including some made of hardware from Home Depot, McGee said. In another scene, models will sport corsets made from screen door materials.

Former student Phillip Martinez has created computer designs to support the themes that will be shown on large screens on both sides of the runway.

The final scene will showcase dresses by Russian designer Ioulia Sviatogor, who works for the company that supplied the dresses for the TV show, Dancing with the Stars.

Students will dress models backstage and act as ushers and hosts.

"We're not asking (the audience) to buy the clothes,'' McGee said. "We're asking them to buy into the magic."
