Principal betting on students' success

Middleton High School principal James Gatlin is backing his vision with his wallet. Gatlin gave $7,000 of his own money in scholarships to seven graduating seniors at a school awards banquet last week. Five students received $1,000 James S. Gatlin scholarships: Tracy Baldwin, Emily Hargrave-Thomas, Matthew Ehring, Michelle Adejumo and Ana Rioja. Andrea Roach and Augustreal Montgomery received $1,000 scholarships in honor of Zelma Young. Young was a Middleton alumna who worked with Gatlin at Chamberlain High School before she died late last year. Gatlin is a Middleton alumnus and an educator in Hillsborough schools for more than 40 years. He came to Middleton as principal in 2004. His goal is to improve students' academic performance and instill respect and work ethics. Since opening as a new high school in 2002, Middleton has earned two D grades from the state. "It's not okay to be mediocre. It's not okay to have a criminal record,'' Gatlin said. "You've got to recognize the long-term value of education.'' Students received the scholarships based on essays they wrote about their involvement in Middleton.
