  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Temporary child care center okayed

By JEREMY HAYES
Published May 14, 2006

The following decisions were made at the County Commission meeting on Tuesday:

CARROLLWOOD: The Bob Sierra Family YMCA, 4029 Northdale Blvd., has received permission to start an afterschool child care center.

The organization has been running a child care center out of the YMCA Youth and Family Center, 4015 Ragg Road. It will move the program to the Bob Sierra Y for six to eight months, beginning in August, while the Youth and Family Center undergoes renovations.

Once renovations are complete, the child care center will move back to the original location. Petition 06-0900

UNIVERSITY AREA: There are some modifications in the works for a 92-townhome project at Bruce B. Downs Boulevard and 42nd Street.

Commissioners granted approval for several modifications to the original plan. The developers no longer need to end the streets in dead ends, because of the presence of private roads. Also, the project will no longer require Dumpsters, and the building configurations will be modified.

Nearby property owners were originally confused by the amendments to the plan, but the project's approval was delayed for two weeks so the situation could be rectified. Commissioners approved the measure after no new protest was voiced. (Petition 06-0809)

The following decisions were made at the April 25 County Commission meeting:

TOWN 'N COUNTRY: Despite Commissioner Kathy Castor's continued disapproval, an 8-acre parcel on Memorial Highway and Countryway Boulevard has been approved for eight new homes.

The development, originally to be built on three parcels, was reduced from 50 homes to 30, and then from 30 to an approved six units to be built on one parcel.

Developers had been trying to raise that number to eight, but Castor has continually dissented because of the added density to the coastal high hazard area.

Other commissioners overrode her dissent, though, and approved eight homes. (Petition 05-1662)

TOWN 'N COUNTRY: Commissioners approved a 14-lot subdivision at Hillsborough Avenue and Race Track Road.

Previously voiced responses were overridden after a continuance when the developer produced two site plans, one to match the Zoning Hearing Master's concerns, and the other to match residents'.

Commissioners, to meet concerns about cross traffic through the neighborhood, decided to require a cul-de-sac and to put neighborhood access to the east of the community. (Petition 06-0072)

LAKE MAGDALENE: Jim Stutzman has received approval to build a business and professional office complex on a site of nearly 1½ acres.

Commercial zoning had already been approved for the site, but a change was still necessary to build the office portion of the complex.

The nod was given with approval of the retention area, a 30-foot setback reduction and a modification of permitted business hours. (Petition 06-0451)
