  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

More medical care scheduled for area

Plans call for a complex on a three-quarter-acre site at Cypress Creek. It joins other practitioners showing an interest in the market.

WESLEY CHAPEL - A proposed medical complex is taking shape at the Cypress Creek development, with a Tampa-based diagnostic radiology center readying plans to become the latest addition.

Site plans filed with county offices show a three-quarter-acre site at the northeast corner of Interstate 75 and State Road 56, with a 6,000-square-foot medical office for SDI Radiologists.

The radiology center joins a formative array of medical practitioners - many from Tampa - positioning themselves for the potentially lucrative central and east Pasco market.

Existing establishments like Point of Care Clinic, west of State Road 54 and I-75, now appear to be just a precursor of a larger trend.

Three hospitals have filed bids to set up tertiary-care locations in Wesley Chapel, including University Community Hospital, Adventist Health Systems and BayCare Health Systems.

Also at Cypress Creek, Dr. William Assad, a S Armenia Avenue doctor who specializes in treating cancer with radiation, paid $310,000 last May for the proposed 1-acre Cypress Creek Cancer Center.

Proposed to be stationed about 400 feet away, the SDI proposal appears poised to feed off Assad's cancer center.

SDI stands for Stern Drake Isbell & Associates, of N Armenia Avenue, the project's owner and developer.

County records show Stern Drake Isbell & Associates paid $635,000 for the site last April.

Diagnostic radiology refers to noninvasive techniques, such as X-rays and CT scans, used to diagnose medical conditions.

Dr. Jeff Younger of SDI did not reply to a request for comment Monday.

In the site plans, the proposal is variously called SDI Diagnostic Imaging and Cypress Creek Diagnostic Center.
