Project HOPE still helping Hurricane Katrina survivors
By TIMES STAFF WRITER
Published May 17, 2006
A program that originally began in 2004 after Hurricane Charley devastated areas of Charlotte and De Soto counties is offering help to Hurricane Katrina survivors. Project HOPE (Helping Our People in Emergencies) is an outreach and referral service aimed at helping those who have moved to the area to rebuild their lives. Programs offered include group and individual crisis counseling and referrals of resources within the community. Special programs focus on children and seniors. Hurricane Katrina survivors that now live in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Manatee, Sarasota and De Soto counties are eligible. Founded by the Florida Center for Child and Family Development, in conjunction with the Department of Children and Families, the program has been funded for the next two months and will likely be extended through the end of the year.
