Landmark status for several bridges would make connections to historyDOWNTOWN - The Columbus Drive bridge is on its way to becoming a local landmark. The City Council last week approved a recommendation of the Historic Preservation Commission to start the landmark designation process for several historic bridges. Others include the Hillsborough Avenue, Laurel Street, Cass Street, Cass Street/CSX Railroad and Platt Street bridges. June 12 is the new deadline to offer proposals for armory redevelopment NORTH HYDE PARK - The city of Tampa extended its deadline for proposals to redevelop the Fort Homer Hesterly Armory at 522 N Howard Ave. to noon June 12. The city and National Guard will choose a proposal that best revitalizes the site. For more information, call 274-8091. City says no to developer's request to resubmit rezoning plans for condoBAYSHORE GARDENS - A developer must wait another year before seeking a rezoning on a proposed condominium tower at Bayshore and Bay to Bay boulevards. The City Council last week denied Citivest's request to waive the rule requiring developers to wait a year to resubmit a rezoning plan unless the new building design is significantly different than the previously rejected one. In April, the council rejected a rezoning request by Citivest to increase the height of the planned tower from the allowed 120 feet to 195 feet. Last week, the council ruled the developer's new plans were not substantially different because they still exceeded the height limit. Three local students get scholarships from DeBartolo Family FoundationPLAZA TERRACE - Three students from local high schools were recently recognized and awarded college scholarships at the sixth annual DeBartolo Family Foundation scholarship dinner and awards ceremony. Solita Jones from Hillsborough High, Tesia Riddle from Middleton High, and Ashley Whiting from Blake High each received $2,500 in recognition of their academic excellence despite financial and personal obstacles. The foundation awarded a total of $62,500 to 25 Tampa Bay area students. New chairman, board members take their place on the Ybor City chamberYBOR CITY - Wes Miller, owner and manager of the Park Drive Partnership real estate investment firm in Central Tampa, is the new chairman of the Ybor City Chamber of Commerce. He was sworn in during the chamber's 76th annual installation at the Columbia Restaurant. He joins chair-elect Debbie Springborn and new board members Angela Rodante, David Alvarez, Sharon Rose, Mary Jane Hales and Jaclyn Ward. Courses dealing with relationships offered by Jewish Family ServicesNORTH TAMPA - Tampa Jewish Family Services is offering several courses for families this month. Building Healthy Relationships/Dealing with Strong Emotions will be Monday at Congregation Rodeph Sholom, 2713 Bayshore Blvd. Understanding the Values of Diversity, Tolerance and Inclusion: Homosexuality and Judaism will be Wednesday at the Jewish Community Center, 13009 Community Campus Drive.
