So far, so good after baby's heart surgery
Darian Gibson, the 5-month-old boy who had experimental heart surgery at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital, was listed in serious condition Thursday. But that's pretty good. He woke up and looked at his parents Wednesday night after surgery, Darian's second of three to repair a severe congenital defect. Said his mother, Christie Pelham of Seffner, "Now that he's made it this far, it's a relief." Darian is part of a national study to see which surgical technique is best to treat babies with this type of heart defect.
Sunk ship may open today to divers
The world's largest artificial reef - formerly known as the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany - is expected to open this afternoon to recreational divers off the Pensacola coast. Navy divers report that the ship landed upright, facing north to south. The flight deck is at a depth of 150 feet.
During storm season, 511 is at your service
With hurricane season only days away, don't forget the free 511 service when traveling - or evacuating. Dial 511 to get real-time traffic reports for all interstates and Florida's Turnpike. During emergencies, 511 updates evacuation routes, bridge and road closures, toll suspensions and occasions when major evacuation routes have been converted to one-way away from storms.
Crash victim steals SUV of helping nurse
The Jacksonville nurse pulled over to aid victims of a car crash while her 5-month-old son and grandmother stayed inside her sport utility vehicle. As the nurse, Alicia Disney, was calling 911 helping one of the hurt, another victim jumped behind the wheel of Disney's SUV and skedaddled - with grandma and baby. After a wild ride, the two were deposited safely on a residential street, according to a Jacksonville TV station's Web site, Local6.com. The SUV was later abandoned.
Swimming pool needs bathrooms closer
The swimming pool at the $14.2-million recreation center under construction in New Port Richey has a little design problem - too few bathroom stalls within 200 feet of the pool. That's a state code no-no. The city will have to add a new bathroom closer.
As always, seniors at St. Petersburg High wore gowns at graduation. It was faculty members who donned them for the first time Wednesday night. A Thursday caption was incorrect.
