Norman's office says he had bypass surgery

TAMPA - Hillsborough Commission Chairman Jim Norman's office confirmed Friday that he underwent heart bypass surgery this week and is recovering.

An initial news release created confusion around the County Center because it seemed to indicate the surgery would take place in the future.

"Commission Chairman Jim Norman has been advised by his doctors that he should undergo bypass heart surgery," the three-sentence release begins. It goes on to say that his doctors expect a full recovery and that Norman intends to return for a July 19 commission meeting.

Norman's aide, Ben Kelly, confirmed later Friday that the surgery had taken place this week at Tampa General Hospital.

"He's in the recovery stage and expects to be home very soon," Kelly said. "He looks great and is definitely looking forward to campaign season."

Norman, who is seeking another term in office this year, faces two challengers.

It was the first time Norman or his office spoke publicly since the commissioner didn't show up for government meetings this week, an absence that spawned speculation around the government complex. Kelly said Norman was concerned for his wife facing the added stress of media inquiries.

"I think Jim was really looking out for Mearline because there was enough pressure on her with her husband facing surgery then having to deal with the media, as well," he said.

Commissioners reached Friday offered hopes for a speedy recovery.

"Commissioner Norman has demonstrated leadership as the senior member of the board, and I miss him," Commissioner Brian Blair said. "I wish him and his wife all the best during this tough recovery period."

Norman is the longest-serving member on the board, having first won election in 1992 to represent northern Hillsborough County. He is seeking a second term as an at-large commissioner representing the whole county.
