Williams takes on Hingis in semifinals

ROME - Former champions Venus Williams and Martina Hingis will battle for a spot in the Italian Open final.
Williams, who beat Hingis en route to the 1999 championship, defeated Jelena Jankovic 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 on Friday. Hingis, who downed Williams in the 1998 final at Foro Italico, stopped Flavia Pennetta 6-3, 6-1.
The other semifinal will be a matchup between Svetlana Kuznetsova and Dinara Safina.
HAMBURG MASTERS:
Mario Ancic rallied from a set and a break down to defeat Nikolay Davydenko 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-3 and reach the semifinals.
Ancic will face eighth-seeded Tommy Robredo today in Germany, while the other semifinal pits Radek Stepanek against unseeded Jose Acasuso.
GRAND PRIX SAR:
Yan Zi advanced to the semifinals, beating third-seeded Emilie Loit 1-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4) in Morocco. Yan will face Meghann Shaughnessy in the semifinals. Shaughnessy beat Melinda Czink 6-1, 6-4.
FOREST HILLS CLAY COURT CLASSIC:
Rain washed out play in New York, forcing tournament officials to move the semifinals to today. In the semifinals, Ricardo Mello will face Robert Kendrick, and Santiago Gonzalez will play Cecil Mamiit.
ISTANBUL OPEN:
Maria Sharapova pulled out of the tournament in Turkey, citing a right ankle injury that forced her withdrawal from last week's tournament in Rome.
The 2004 Wimbledon champion was to be the top-seeded player at the Istanbul Open that begins Monday.
BOHMOVA ARREST:
Pro tennis player Katerina Bohmova and her mother, who were arrested for shoplifting about $450 worth of clothes and jewelry, pleaded no contest to petty theft, the Duval County State Attorney's office said.
The 19-year-old tennis star from the Czech Republic and her mother received credit for the time they spent in jail and were sentenced to pay $500 in court costs.

Runner retracts appeal
Marathon runner Deeja Youngquist withdrew her appeal of a two-year doping suspension Friday.
The 29-year-old tested positive for EPO during an out-of-competition exam before the 2004 U.S. Olympic trials but challenged the validity of the test. EPO stimulates production of red blood cells and increases aerobic power.

Marion Jones will run the 100 meters at the FBK meet in the Netherlands next week, organizers said. After an 11-month absence from competition, the sprinter made a return last week, winning in 11.06 seconds at the Gala Banamex Veracruz meet in Mexico.

Rocky Juarez faces Marco Antonio Barrera tonight for Barrera's WBC super featherweight title. Juarez will take a 25-1 record into the scheduled 12-rounder against Barrera, who is 61-4. Janos Nagy meets Jorge Rodrigo Barrios in the co-main event, a WBO lightweight title match.
CYCLING:
Spain's Juan Horrach Rippol prevailed in a six-way sprint to win the 12th stage of the Giro d'Italia in Italy. Ivan Basso, who finished seven minutes behind the winner, retained the overall leader's pink jersey.
SAILING:
America's Cup winner Alinghi led the standings after the opening day of Act 11 of the Louis Vuitton Cup challenger trials in Spain. The Swiss yacht won the second leg. Victory Challenge of Sweden, which won the first leg, is in second.
