  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

What will it take to stop irresponsible developers?

Letters to the Editor
Published May 23, 2006

I water my lawn only once a week because I thought there were watering restrictions in Pasco County. But apparently not, because when I am out on my daily walks I see people watering their lawns several times a week, especially on weekends. And we wonder why there are so many sinkholes in Pasco County.

Plus, with all the new development, where is all the water going to come from for these new homes? And who will be buying all of these homes? Certainly not residents of Pasco County, because the houses will cost too much for the average citizen here to afford. What will it take to stop all of this new development? Maybe when we see the cost of water per gallon exceed that of gasoline?

Paul Schmidt, Bayonet Point The FCAT punishes hard-working students

Shame on Ridgewood High School! Shame on the Florida school system.

Dana Salvazno was voted most spirited of her senior class and carries a 3.0 grade point average. Sounds pretty remarkable to me, and yet she was not allowed to go to her graduation ceremony because of a low FCAT score.

This young lady has worked hard to make her high school years a success, as I'm sure many other seniors have, and how are they rewarded? No ceremony for them!

What exactly are we teaching our children?

The FCATs are a farce and should not be used as a diploma requirement.

Wake up, Florida. Give credit where it is due. There are plenty of good students who deserve better. Reward them properly!

Karen Shaw, Land O'Lakes TV, movies should show seat belt wearing

I read an article about a girl who was thrown from her vehicle because she wasn't wearing her seat belt.

I have always been a big advocate of people wearing seat belts since one saved my life in 1973. I would have been thrown from the vehicle if not for my wearing my seat belt. I can't believe how many people, especially teenagers, do not wear their seat belts.

Now what gets me upset is that there isn't a law requiring the movie and television industry, for films shot inside a vehicle, to show people wearing seat belts. We are not sending the right messages by showing people unrestrained in their cars in movies, television shows and commercials.

Judi Rykert, Holiday Kudos to Top of the Class photographer

Recognition and commendation to the photographer for the Top of the Class feature of local valedictorian/salutatorian class graduates.

It showed talent, innovation and imagination.

E.E. Sanders, Port Richey What's the fuss about the "Da Vinci Code'?

After reading the Da Vinci Code and with much anticipation, I saw this film when it opened Friday night. The movie followed the book and was not boring at all. I don't understand what all the fuss is about.

After all, it is fiction, just as Indiana Jones is fiction. I did not hear any criticism as we exited the theater. Again, don't listen to the critics. Judge for yourself.
