Suit says deputy in fatal chase planned assault

BARTOW - The family of a 16-year-old who died in a car crash after a high-speed chase is suing Polk County, saying a deputy was pursuing him and another boy to sexually assault them.

After the May 31, 2002, crash, former Deputy Scott Lawson was arrested when tips revealed he was pretending to be a physician's assistant and performing medical exams on young men. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to sexual battery and six counts of practicing medicine without a license.

The lawsuit, filed by the family of Miles White, claims Polk County knew of Lawson's pedophilia.

County Attorney Joseph Jarret's office said it had not received the lawsuit and had no comment.

White was a passenger in a car driven by Adam Lucas Jacoby. The car crashed into a tree after Lawson chased it in an unmarked Ford Crown Victoria for 15 miles at speeds up to 120 mph.
