Originally meant as a day to remember the Civil War dead, Memorial Day now is a time to honor all those who have died in service to the country.

The Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell and the Bay Pines National Cemetery near St. Petersburg both will have ceremonies Monday.

The Florida National ceremony begins with a musical prelude at 9:45 a.m. The guest speaker is Capt. Alexander Harlemor, detachment commander and decorated pilot who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. The cemetery can be reached by taking Interstate 75, exit 309 (Webster), then going a half mile west. (352) 793-7740.

The Bay Pines ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. and features U.S. Rep. C.W. "Bill" Young, R-Indian Shores. Above, veteran Coulson Fay saluted during the national anthem at the 2004 memorial service. The cemetery is off Bay Pines Boulevard, just west of the St. Petersburg city limits. (727) 398-9426.

Many other cities, cemeteries and veterans organizations around the Tampa Bay area also will be having memorials Monday. Please see local editions of the St. Petersburg Times for details.
