SPARTANS SKINNY:
Tampa (50-6 and ranked No. 1 for most of the season) opens the double-elimination tournament at 2 p.m. today against Francis Marion (41-16). If the Spartans win, they play at 7:33 p.m. Monday. If they lose, their next game is 3:30 p.m. Monday. The Spartans are led by Sunshine State Conference player of the year Lee Cruz, who hit .438 with 23 homers and 88 RBIs. If Cruz, a Pasco High graduate, hits two more home runs, he ties Tino Martinez for Tampa's all-time season home run record set in 1986. Cruz's teammate, Orlando Rosales, also a Pasco High graduate, comes in with one of the nation's best batting averages at .428, with 14 homers and 68 RBIs. On the mound, UT is led by Leto High graduate Sergio Perez, who has a no-hitter this season and is 10-2 overall with a 2.15 ERA.
