Termite roll call increases by one

By WILLIAM R. LEVESQUE

The species - Cryptotermes bracketti - is found only on the island, making San Salvador the world's smallest island with a unique termite species.

Researchers are scouting for new species of termites that one day may invade South Florida and present a problem to homeowners. But this new species is not considered a structural pest.

"Because termites pose a constant threat to Florida homes and businesses, we do everything possible to understand these insects,'' said Van Waddill, director of UF's Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center.

Perhaps it should come as no surprise that the research was funded by a familiar name in pest-control circles.

Terminix.
