Show troops you care

On Memorial Day, we honor those who have fallen in service to the nation. We can also give tangible support to forces on duty today.

Traditionally, Memorial Day is a time to remember the soldiers who died in service to their country. Through ceremonies of honor and remembrance, we do what we can to acknowledge a loss that can never really be repaid. This Memorial Day should also be a reminder to every American to show that same respect to those on active military duty in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world.

Particularly at a time when the purpose and successful conclusion of a military struggle is in doubt, soldiers need to know we care. There are ways to make that support tangible.

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service has a variety of programs through which Americans can make the lives of soldiers a little easier by sending gifts or prepaid phone cards. Gift certificates to be redeemed through the base exchange service can be purchased in increments of $5 and distributed even if you don't know a specific soldier. Calling cards can be sent to soldiers or their families to help them stay in touch.

Through Operation Interdependence, civilians can send military personnel a package of civilian rations or "C-rats," which include toiletries, snacks, CDs and such. That service does not interfere with the regular military delivery system. There are also ways to help military families and wounded soldiers.

All of the information needed to make your contribution to soldier morale is available through the Army and Air Force Exchange Service Web site (www.aafes.com). By phone, gift certificates and C-rats can be ordered through CertifiChecks by calling toll-free 1-877-770-4438.

Soldiers deployed in hostile lands know that the bugler may be playing taps for them on some future Memorial Day. It takes courage and commitment to face such risk on behalf of our country. None should be left to wonder if we appreciate the sacrifice.
