Memorial Day events

Here are many of the Memorial Day events scheduled around the region:

North Pinellas

-- A sunset ceremony honoring veterans killed in action is scheduled at 7 p.m. at the Military Court of Honor in Largo Central Park, 101 Central Park Drive, Largo. Keynote speaker will be Gold Star mother Rachel Barrett. Call 587-6775 or visit www.largo.com

-- A Memorial Day service begins at 9:30 a.m. at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens, 1750 Curlew Road, Palm Harbor. The featured speaker will be Oldsmar Mayor Jerry Beverland. Col. Jerry F. Custin, U.S. Air Force retired, will serve as master of ceremonies. Light refreshments will be served after the ceremony. Call 789-2000.

-- A remembrance service is scheduled at 11 a.m. at Church of the Good Shepherd, 639 Edgewater Drive, Dunedin. Father Bob Williams will officiate, and Maj. David T. Bond, U.S. Marine Corps retired, will speak. A light lunch will be served after the service. Call 771-9031.

-- Oldsmar will sponsor a service at 6 p.m. in front of City Hall, 100 State St. W. Chaplain Capt. Richard Holmes of MacDill Air Force Base will speak, the Clam Bayou Jazz Band will perform and organizers expect state Reps. Gus Bilirakis, R-Palm Harbor, and Kim Berfield, R-Clearwater, to attend.

South Pinellas

Bay Pines National Cemetery, ceremony begins 9:30 a.m. Cemetery is off Bay Pines Boulevard, just west of St. Petersburg city limits. (727) 398-9426.

Citrus County

-- Eugene Quinn Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4337: Service at 11 a.m., picnic at noon and karaoke with Wild Willie at 1 p.m., 906 State Road 44 E, Inverness. Tickets, $3.

-- Herbert Serber American Legion Post 225: Ceremony at 11 a.m., Hills of Rest Cemetery, U.S. 41 S, Floral City, across from Ferris Groves.

-- American Legion Post 166: Service at 11 a.m., Fountains Memorial Park Cemetery, 5635 W Green Acres St., Homosassa.

-- Harry Nesbitt VFW Post 10087: Service at 10:30 a.m., Fero Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 5891 N Lecanto Highway (County Road 491), Beverly Hills. Refreshments after the service. Picnic at noon at the post, 2170 W Vet Lane, Beverly Hills.

Hernando County

-- Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8713 will sponsor a Memorial Day celebration today. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. at Rogers Christmas House, 103 S Saxon Ave. Post Cmdr. Jim Simonetti and other post and auxiliary members will participate in the service. Auxiliary member Kathy Nelson will perform military music on the keyboard and finish with taps. After the service, hot dogs and hamburgers will be served at the post at 1686 E Jefferson St.

-- The Florida National Cemetery Memorial Day Ceremony will be at 10 a.m. today. The scheduled speaker will be Capt. Alexander Harlemor, who is the detachment commander for Company A, 642nd Aviation Intermediate Maintenance at Cecil Field in Jacksonville, as well as the logistics management officer for the Army Aviation Support Facility in Brooksville. The cemetery's public information center will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Memorial Day, and representatives will be there to assist visitors. The cemetery is at 6502 SW 102nd Ave., one mile west of Interstate 75 at Exit 309 (Webster exit). For information, call the cemetery office from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at (352) 793-7740.

-- The Spring Hill Garden Club will have a "Music in the Garden" Memorial Day concert from 1 to 3 p.m. today at the Nature Coast Botanical Gardens on Parker Avenue. The Acoustical Guitar Club of Spring Hill will entertain. Garden tours and refreshments will be offered. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Donations to help keep up the botanical gardens will be accepted.

-- Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10209 will have a Memorial Day celebration and dance from 2 to 5 p.m. today. The event will include music by the Frankie Dee NY Orchestra. The VFW post is at 15166 Spring Hill Drive. Reservations are recommended for large groups. For reservations, call 686-0695. For directions, call the post at 796-0398.

-- The Brookridge community will have its annual Memorial Day ceremony at noon Tuesday at the clubhouse, 8150 Hampton St. The theme will be "Under These Flags We Have Served." The event will include a chronology and history of Old Glory, presented by Knights of Columbus members. Past Grand Knight H. "Obie" O'Brien will narrate. The event is free, and light refreshments will be available. For information, call Jack Waldron at 597-1113 or Jack Campbell at 596-3818.

-- A Memorial Day service will be presented at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Florida Hills Memorial Cemetery, 14354 Spring Hill Drive, east of the Suncoast Parkway. The event is cohosted by Florida Hills Memorial Gardens, Turner Funeral Homes and VFW Post 10209. For details, call 796-0398 or 796-7080.
