Fest will showcase works of 150 crafters

ST. PETE BEACH - The 13th annual St. Pete Beach Corey Area Craft Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The free event will feature works by 150 crafters. A wide variety of handmade products will be on display, including jewelry, ceramics, pottery, clothing, sculpture, dolls, stained glass and unique pet items. All of the displayed work will be available for purchase at prices from $15 to $3,000. An expansive green market will feature plants, orchids, exotic flora, handmade soaps, gourmet spices and fresh kettle corn. For more information, call 954 472-3755 or (813) 962-0388, or visit www.artfestival.com. ---- A one-day babysitting course offered by the American Red Cross will be June 9 at the St. Pete Beach Library, 365 73rd Ave. The program teaches youths (ages 11 and up) the responsibilities and qualities of being a great babysitter. Participants learn about safety, safe play, basic care, first aid and professionalism. The $40-per-student fee includes training by a certified instructor, a babysitter's handbook and an official "American Red Cross Certified Babysitter" T-shirt. Registration is required. Information and registration: 898-3111. ---- The Leisure Services' Recreation Department is holding its first ever summer teen program on Tuesdays, Thursdays and some Fridays. Activities include field trips to Adventure Island, Lazer Tag, ice skating and much more. The cost of the program is $300 for nine weeks or $15 a day and is open to teens ages 12 to 15. Information: 363-2146. Gulfport The Venturas' hot mix of retro swinging styles will be featured June 9 during Swing Time at the Gulfport Casino Ballroom, 5500 Shore Blvd. S. The event starts with a group swing-dance lesson from 8 to 9 p.m. (no partner needed), followed by live music and dancing from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $11 admission fee includes the dance lesson. Indian Rocks Beach The new pet ministry of Calvary Episcopal Church will sponsor a disaster preparedness for pets class at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the parish hall, 1615 First St. Veterinarian May-Li Cuypers will instruct owners on the importance of preparing their pet for a disaster, such as a hurricane. Information: 595-2374. ---- The public is invited to attend the city's fifth annual Flag Retirement Ceremony at noon June 14, which is Flag Day, at Chic A Si Park on Fourth Avenue and Second Street, near Crabby Bill's restaurant. The ceremony is held each year to dispose of all American flags that have become torn and tattered in the service of the country. Flags may be brought to the ceremony or delivered to Indian Rocks Beach City Hall, 1507 Bay Palm Blvd., or VFW Post 10094, 14288 Walsingham Road. The ceremony is a joint effort by Indian Rocks Beach, the Clearwater Chapter of MOAA and VFW Post 10094. Mayor Bill Ockunzzi will lead the ceremony. Sessions for children, 3-6, will meet from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Young artists 7-12 will enjoy a creative adventure in painting, pencil drawing, charcoal, mixed media and paper sculpture from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. Clay classes for ages 7-11 will be held in two-week sessions, from 9 a.m. to noon June 5-16, June 19-30 and July 10-21. Advanced clay classes for teens ages 12-15 will be held Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Beach Art Center is next door to city hall. The weekend of piratical merriment supported by the John's Pass Merchants Association includes: The Pirates Ball (7 to 11 p.m. June 9), hurricane expo, adult costume contest, face painting, village-wide treasure hunt, pirate ship invasion and water battle, Pirates Parade and Pillage the Village, pub crawl and brawl, Brigands Bazaar/shopping, children's costume contest, and Florida Blood Services. Entertainment will feature: Cascabel and Izabel, the West Coast Mutineers, Rusty Cutlass, Mad Eye Mitch, and For Love or Money. South Pasadena Palms of Pasadena Hospital and Wellness Seminars Inc. will host a weight-loss seminar from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 7 at the Pasadena Professional Building, Boca Ciega Room, 1609 Pasadena Ave. S. The program combines the power of hypnosis with behavior modification. Participants learn to lose weight without feelings of deprivation or denial in one session and learn to eliminate unwanted habits such as overeating, snacking and emotional eating. The first 45 minutes of each session is a free orientation. If the participant feels comfortable with the program, they pay a one-time fee of $69. The fee includes a powerful hypnotic session, behavior modification booklet, home reinforcement audiocassette tape (CDs are available) and unlimited free repetitions of the hypnosis, if needed. Treasure Island Treasure Island's Children's Summer Camp will be held through Aug. 4 for children ages 4-12. Program hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday with extended care provided before and after camp. Camp fees are $350 per child for residents and $700 per child for nonresidents. Two proofs of residency are required at registration for all Treasure Island residents. Attendance will be limited this year so participants are encouraged to register early. Activities will include arts and crafts, games, sports, movies, parties, guest speakers and entertainment, field trips, and more.
