A Tarpon Springs tradition returns with a splash
By TIMES STAFF WRITER
Published June 1, 2006
Tarpon Springs is reviving the Water Sports Carnival, a town tradition during the 1920s. In those days, plays were performed on a floating stage in Spring Bayou, illuminated boats paraded at night and locals competed in activities such as tub races. The photo above is from the 1925 festival. The new Tarpon Springs Water Sports Carnival and Illuminated Fleet Parade includes music and entertainment Friday and Saturday on a floating stage and boat races, kids' relay races and other water events both afternoons. In Craig Park, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, you'll find craft and food vendors, performers and kids' activities. At 8 p.m. Friday, there will be a screening of the film A Midsummer Night's Dream, which was the play performed at the last Water Sports Carnival in the 1920s. The boat parade is at 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free to all events. (727) 937-6100.
