Breaking up is hard to do onscreen, too

The wicked serendipity of Jennifer Aniston's personal life and career continue Friday with the release of The Break-Up (PG-13). No, it isn't a documentary account of her divorce from Brad Pitt, who famously left Aniston for his Mr. and Mrs. Smith co-star Angelina Jolie. But The Break-Up did provide a real-life rebound for Aniston into the beefy arms of Vince Vaughn, who plays her combative ex-lover on screen.

Aniston's recent film roles in Friends With Money and Rumor Has It as jilted women - plus Derailed, as a Jolie-style deceiver - led to uncomfortable interview questions about art imitating her private life. Of course, that streak of roles and Aniston's circumstances are coincidental. However, the striking parallels should make her happy not to have been cast in Poseidon.

The Break-Up casts Aniston as Brooke, once so closely linked to Gary (Vaughn) that they share ownership of a Chicago condominium. The mortgage is more enduring than their commitment, sparking a bitter custody battle, since good Windy City real estate is hard to find. Each vows to force the other to surrender their share by acting too obnoxious to stand.

The Break-Up was screened too late for Weekend. A review will be published Friday in Floridian.
