Hot Ticket: 'Shirley Valentine' at play on the Gorilla stage

By JOHN FLEMING
Published June 1, 2006

Willy Russell is England's working-class playwright, a Liverpool native who dropped out of school at 15 and became a hairdresser. His plays feature strong women, such as the mother in Blood Brothers and the intrepid title characters in Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine. Bridget Bean stars in Gorilla Theatre's Shirley Valentine, directed by Nancy Cole, in which a middle-aged married woman gets the chance to go on a Greek vacation without her husband. It's the second collaboration between director and actor this season, following Bean's role in Alan Bennett's Talking Heads, staged by Cole in the fall at Gorilla, 4419 N Hubert Ave., Tampa. Shirley Valentine opens tonight and runs through June 18. $10-$25. (813) 879-2914; gorillatheatre.com.
