  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Bear, a pug mix, walks on a treadmill during the Purina Pro Plan Rally Across America event in Dallas. The exhibit allows owners and their pets to walk side by side on treadmills to help support local pet rescue efforts.

For the 20th year, Taste of Pinellas mixes music and food to raise money for All Children's Hospital.

The fete coincides with the annual All Children's Telethon, broadcast on WFLA-Ch. 8 from 8:30 p.m. Saturday to 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Kids activities include a giant water slide, obstacle course, storytelling and more.

Taste of Pinellas runs from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday (fireworks Saturday night) and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday at Vinoy Park, Fifth Avenue NE and Bayshore Drive, St. Petersburg.

The is no admission charge for the fireworks; food tastings are $1 to $4 each.

Virtual walk, real help

The Purina Pro Plan Rally Across America Tour is a new addition to Taste of Pinellas. It's a "virtual walk" to raise money for local animal rescue efforts.

Purina Pro Plan will donate $5 for every five minutes humans and pets walk side by side on treadmills.

Pets also will be available for adoption Saturday and Sunday.

For more information on the Rally Across America Tour, see www.rallytorescue.org.
