Top five movies

By STEVE PERSALL
Published June 1, 2006

Current movies recommended by the Times:

1. Over the Hedge - DreamWorks' animation team has a winner in this clever tale of critters seeking food after suburbia encroaches on their turf.

2. United 93 - Writer-director Paul Greengrass revisits the Sept. 11, 2001, hijacking of an airliner by terrorists and the story of passengers who rebelled. Tough to watch but expertly conceived.

3. X-Men: The Last Stand - Those Marvel Comics mutants continue the smartest superhero series in memory, with a positively Shakespearean performance by Ian McKellen as Magneto.

4. Mission: Impossible III - Director J.J. Abrams injects life and clarity into the franchise, ensuring we'll have Tom Cruise to kick around a while longer.

5. Akeelah and the Bee - An inner-city youth (Keke Palmer) aspires to become a National Spelling Bee finalis. Doug Atchison's movie is a champ.
