PITTSBURGH - San Diego Padres left-hander Shawn Estes decided to have reconstructive left elbow surgery after consulting with three doctors and will miss the rest of this season and possibly the start of the next.

The Padres also decided Friday that staff ace Jake Peavy (4-5, 4.15 ERA) will miss his scheduled start today in Pittsburgh because of right shoulder tendinitis.

Estes strained a ligament his left elbow during his first game with San Diego on April 5 and went on the disabled list two days later. While attempting to rehabilitate the injury last week, he felt discomfort in the elbow and decided to have the surgery after talking to other players who have had the operation.

St. Louis delayed making a move with injured Jim Edmonds, at least for the weekend. Edmonds hasn't played since Sunday due to what the team described as a mild to moderate abdominal strain. Right-hander Chris Carpenter is due to return to the rotation next week from the DL.

The Cardinals also purchased the contract of outfielder Timo Perez from Triple-A Memphis.

Florida purchased the contract of left-hander Scott Tankersley from Double-A Carolina. The Marlins activated right-hander Carlos Martinez from the 15-day DL and designated right-handers Todd Wellemeyer and Franklyn German for assignment.

San Francisco put catcher Mike Matheny on the 15-day disabled list with a concussion. The 35-year-old was hit in the head several times by foul balls during a three-game series at Florida this week.

Houston moved Jeff Bagwell to the 60-day disabled list. Bagwell is not expected to play this season because of an arthritic right shoulder.

Sent right-hander Gavin Floyd to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and recalled left-hander Eude Brito.

Colorado activated catcher Yorvit Torrealba from the disabled list and optioned catcher Miguel Ojeda to Colorado Springs.
