Spain throws out Sept. 11 conviction Spain's Supreme Court on Thursday threw out an al-Qaida suspect's conviction for conspiracy to commit murder in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, weeks after prosecutors acknowledged the evidence against him was weak. The court upheld a separate conviction against Syrian-born Spaniard Imad Yarkas for belonging to a terrorist organization. The Supreme Court also confirmed the acquittal of Moroccans Driss Chebli, Sadik Merizak and Abdelaziz Benyaich, who were accused of belonging to or collaborating with al-Qaida. The court did not give its grounds for the decisions. THE UNUSUAL Man sentenced for mouse-in-food scam In Traverse City, Mich., a man who stuffed a dead mouse into his Taco Bell burrito in a botched extortion attempt has been sentenced to 16 to 30 months in prison. Ryan Daniel Goff, 20, pleaded guilty to a felony count of attempted false pretenses between $1,000 and $20,000. Sheriff's investigators say Goff reported finding the mouse to the local health department and Taco Bell's regional manager. According to court records, he told the manager: "It won't be a good day if the media finds out about this." But investigators said his girlfriend told them he purchased frozen mice from a pet store and put one of them in his burrito. UPDATE Mine explosion In Harlan, Ky., state investigators on Friday ended three days of private interviews with employees of a coal mine where five men were killed in an explosion, and federal officials planned to start their own closed-door interviews. The focus of the discussions with more than two dozen employees from Kentucky Darby Mine No. 1 has been the protective seals designed to contain combustible and poisonous gases underground. Unlike conventional seals made of concrete, the ones at the mine were made with lightweight fiberglass blocks. The Darby mine has been closed since the explosion. Preliminary reports showed three miners died from carbon monoxide poisoning, while two were killed by the heat and explosion. A sixth miner survived by crawling out of the mine.
