Coach of the year: Eileen Givens, Countryside
By BOB PUTNAM
Published June 4, 2006
Eileen Givens coached some of the best female track athletes in Pinellas County, guiding Rose Richmond, Nadia Covington and others to numerous state titles when she was in charge at Lakewood.
Givens left after the 2003 season and figured she was done coaching at the high school level.
But after two seasons away, Givens came back to coach the boys at Countryside.
She took over the program when football assistant Todd Belisle stepped down and her presence paid dividends.
More than 40 boys came out for track this season, and Givens had talent in every event.
She put those numbers to good use. In the regular season, the Cougars won titles at the Richard Allen Relays, Ed Wells/Kiwanis Invitational, Pinellas County Athletic Conference meet and West Coast Invitational. The success continued in the postseason with Countryside winning a district title and finishing second in its region.
