NEW YORK - Derek Jeter was not allowed to pick up a bat or a ball Tuesday, as the Yankees believe rest and treatment is the best therapy for his bruised right thumb.
The Yankees do not expect him to play for another few days but did not feel the injury was serious enough to place him on the disabled list. The Yankees instead called up former Devil Rays infielder Nick Green from Triple-A Columbus as insurance while Jeter is unavailable.
"Anytime you get hit, it's going to hurt for a while," said Jeter, whose thumb was hit by a pitch Sunday in Baltimore. "I've been hit in the elbow and it hurt for a month, but you don't have to use your left elbow for everything you do. Unfortunately, I've got to use my right thumb pretty much for everything except running the bases."
A'S OUTFIELDER RETURNS:
Oakland activated Milton Bradley from the 15-day disabled list before a three-game series with the Indians, who traded the enigmatic outfielder two years ago. Bradley had been sidelined since May 7 with a sprained knee.
BOSOX CALL UP PROSPECT:
The Red Sox recalled right-hander Craig Hansen, their first-round pick last year, to shore up an overworked bullpen and optioned reliever Jermaine Van Buren to Triple-A Pawtucket. Hansen had a 2.66 ERA in seven games for Pawtucket.
MAROTH ON 60-DAY:
The Tigers transferred left-hander Mike Maroth to the 60-day disabled list and purchased outfielder Alexis Gomez's contract from Triple-A Toledo. Maroth had arthroscopic surgery last week to remove bone chips in his left elbow.
