A Florida Chamber of Commerce poll shows Charlie Crist leading Tom Gallagher 42 percent to 23 percent in the Republican gubernatorial primary.
The recent poll, conducted by McLaughlin & Associates, included 800 likely Republican primary voters in Florida. Polling was conducted from May 23 to 25, and the margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. A chamber poll conducted in December showed Crist, the state attorney general, leading 38 to 19 percent for Gallagher, the state's chief financial officer.
Other results of the chamber's GOP poll include:
- 68 percent say things in Florida are going in the right direction.
- President Bush has a favorable rating of 79 percent and an unfavorable rating of 17 percent.
- Gov. Jeb Bush has a favorable rating of 87 percent and an unfavorable rating of 9 percent.
The Florida chamber has conducted more than 20 statewide polls during the last 36 months. It plans to release poll results for the Democratic gubernatorial primary next week.
"In order to provide our members and the business community with the tools for our political agenda and the most up-to-date, reliable information possible, it is imperative that we know what is happening in Florida," said Marian Johnson, vice president of political strategy. "Numbers change, especially when candidates really begin their campaigns and the media and direct mail hits households."
