Top five movies

By STEVE PERSALL, Times Film Critic
Published June 8, 2006

Current movies recommended by the Times:

1. A Prairie Home Companion - Director Robert Altman and an all-star cast turn Garrison Keillor's radio show into a memorable movie.

2. Over the Hedge - DreamWorks' animation team has a winner in this clever tale of critters seeking food after suburbia encroaches on their turf.

3. Cars - Pixar, Disney and NASCAR. If that combination can't please moviegoers, the animation industry is in deep trouble.

4. X-Men: The Last Stand - Those Marvel Comics mutants continue the smartest superhero series in memory, with a positively Shakespearean performance by Ian McKellen as Magneto.

5. Mission: Impossible III - Director J.J. Abrams injects life and clarity into the franchise, ensuring we'll have Tom Cruise to kick around a while longer.
