Towboat catches fire and sinks; captain rescued from water

By TIMES STAFF WRITER

HERNANDO BEACH - A towboat caught fire and sank off Hernando Beach on Thursday, according to the Hernando Sheriff's Office. About 3:30 p.m., the boat's captain, Wayne Doyle , was 6 miles off the coast fishing. He tried to start his engines, but one of them exploded. The fire spread and engulfed the boat. Doyle could not put out the blaze with his fire extinguisher, so he jumped into the water with a flotation cushion. He was picked up a short time later by a passing boater, Roy Cinkiewicz , who heard Doyle's distress call on marine radio. The boat burned to the water line and then sank, according to the sheriff's report. The sunken boat was owned by Tow Boat U.S., a company that rescues and salvages ships in trouble.
