Arroyo blazes path for county grads

By DAVID MURPHY
Published June 14, 2006

It's not hard to guess which Hernando County product is having the most professional success this baseball season.

But, just in case, we'll give you a hint.

It starts with a "B," and it ends with a "ronson Arroyo."

Hernando County's boy wonder was back at it this week, pitching seven innings and picking up his eighth win of the season in a 7-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. He gave up just five hits and one run, striking out three and walking none.

Arroyo is now 8-2 with a 2.31 ERA and looks like a lock to represent the National League at the MLB All-Star Game in Pittsburgh July 11.

A look at some county prospects with aspirations of Arroyo-esque success (all statistics through Monday):

Dee Brown, OF, Savannah Sand Gnats (Class A/Nationals)

Brown, of Hernando, struggled early last week, going 0-for-11 in a three-game stretch. He has a hit in each of his past four games though, and has five hits in his last 13 at-bats. For the season, he is hitting .257 with 29 runs scored, 29 RBIs and four home runs.

Patrick Ryan, RP, West Virginia Power (Class A/Brewers)

The Central product is still enjoying considerable success. Last week, he made three appearances, pitching a total of five innings and giving up one run. The middle reliever picked up his second victory of the season Friday when he pitched a perfect seventh inning. For the season, he is 2-1 with a 1.79 ERA. He has pitched 40 innings, striking out 37 and walking eight.

Bert Snow, SP, Shreveport Sports (Independent)

In his last appearance, Snow gave up two runs in five innings and left the game when it was tied 2-2. The Sports eventually won, but Snow took home a no-decision. He is 2-1 with a 1.73 ERA in six games. He has 41 strikeouts and 15 walks in 36 innings.

Tyrone Woods, IF, Chunichi Dragons (Nippon Pro/Central League)

He is one of Japan's most-renowned sluggers, but the Hernando High product is stuck on 14 home runs. Still, that's good enough for fifth place in the Central League. He is also among the league leaders in RBIs (48), walks (35) and slugging percentage (.536).
