Learn better lawn care, greenbelting and more

Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service will offer the following free programs: - "Lawn Care 101: Preventing Bad Lawns," 10 a.m. Saturday at the extension office, 19490 Oliver St., Brooksville. The speaker will be urban horticulture agent Jim Moll. Participants will learn about fertilization, water requirements and how to recognize and treat small problems in their lawn before they become expensive and time consuming. Space is limited; call to register. - "Greenbelting - The Facts," 5:30 p.m. Monday at the extension office, 19490 Oliver St., Brooksville. The speaker will be regional specialized extension agent Stacy Strickland. This class is for landowners interested in the rules and laws on greenbelting in Hernando County. A representative from the Hernando County Property Appraiser's Office will answer questions. Call to register. - "The Shady Side of Your Landscape," 10 a.m. Tuesday, Forest Oaks Government Center, 7479 Forest Oaks Blvd., Spring Hill. The speaker will be John Korycki, Florida Yards and Neighborhoods program coordinator. Participants will get good ideas for plant material and specialized maintenance practices. Road classification, hearing process topic of workshop BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando County Planning and Zoning Commission will have a workshop at 1 p.m. June 22 in the County Commission Chambers (Room 160) at the Hernando County Government Center, 20 N Main St. The purpose of the workshop is to discuss the future functional classification roadways and the application process for public hearings. Host homes needed for foreign exchange students World Heritage is seeking families, couples and single parents (with or without children at home) to host a high school-aged foreign exchange student for the 2006-07 school year. Beach club to hold many music, dinner events HERNANDO BEACH - Hernando Beach Club will host the following events: - The Southern Exposure Jazz Band will present a "Nite of Jazz'' Saturday. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., show time at 7. This will be an outdoor concert, weather permitting. Attendees should bring chairs or blankets. The band will perform the best of Duke Ellington, Count Basie and others. Light snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase. No coolers allowed. Tickets are $10 for members, $12 for nonmembers. - "Nostalgia Nite" Dinner Dance, June 30. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:30 and music with Don Pinto starts at 7. Dinner includes chicken parmigiana with pasta and dessert. The cost for the dinner and dance is $12 for members, $14 for nonmembers. The cost to attend the dance only (admission after 7 p.m.) is $8 for both members and nonmembers. Reservations required by June 22. - Fourth of July barbecue, 6 p.m. July 4. Music will be provided by Southern Delight starting at 7 p.m. There is no cost for members; nonmembers must pay $8. Tickets must be purchased no later than June 25. - The band Rebound will present a "Nite on the Gulf" on July 22. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and show time is at 7. This will be an outdoor concert, weather permitting. Tickets are $10 for members, $12 for nonmembers. Bring a chair or blanket; no coolers allowed. Refreshments and snacks will be available for purchase. - Dinners are offered at the club at 6:30 p.m. every Friday. Prices are $8 to $10; dessert and coffee included. A cash bar is available. Ballroom dance lessons start at 7:30 p.m. Nonmembers may participate in two dinners without joining the club. Reservations are required by Tuesdays. Thursday is deadline for entering July 4 parade HIGH POINT - Entries will be accepted through Thursday for the High Point community's annual Fourth of July parade. Anyone interested in participating in the parade must fill out an entry form. The parade lineup will begin at 8:30 a.m. July 4, with the parade starting at 9 a.m. Monetary awards will be given to the best entry in various categories.
