U.S. didn't know roles

HAMBURG, Germany - Midfielder Bobby Convey has an idea why the United States played poorly in its 3-0 loss to the Czechs: Players didn't know what they were supposed to do.

"Everyone did not do their role, maybe didn't know their role, maybe didn't know what to do," Convey said Wednesday. "I don't think it was confusion. It wasn't that people didn't know where to go. We just kind of didn't really jell well together."

Convey contrasted Monday's loss with the quarterfinal berth of 2002.

"Everyone knew their role," he said. "And I think that's what we kind of got away from a little bit."

U.S. coach Bruce Arena didn't speak with reporters.

ENGLAND:

Forward Wayne Rooney, who broke a bone in his right foot April29, will be a game-time decision today.

IRAN:

Defender Mehrzad Madanchi was hurt at practice and might miss a game. Madanchi was hit from behind by forward Ali Karimi. Afterward, Karimi was yanked by the shirt by several players angry with him for injuring Madanchi, who replaced Karimi against Mexico.

FAN PUNISHED:

A Croatian, whose name was not disclosed, was fined 140 Euros (about $176) for running onto the field Tuesday against Brazil.
