Proposed gas tax could go into effect Jan. 1

The Hernando County Commission is considering an additional three-cent-per-gallon gas tax. The commission was discussing the issue Wednesday, and if a public hearing is approved, it would be scheduled for 9 a.m. June 27 at the county government center. If the proposed tax is passed, it would go into effect on Jan. 1. County officials said failing to levy the tax could cost $23-million in lost revenue over the next decade. They also said the additional money raised would help offset the rising price of asphalt and a projected $1.4-million annual shortfall.
