They want to rock, but it can be so hard

Finding hit songs for commercials is getting harder. Thousands of golden oldies are out there, but Madison Avenue is on the hunt for fresh tunes that consumers don't associate with products. "A lot of the big, known songs and baby-boomer hits that we have grown up with have been used," says Mike Boris, a vice president and executive music producer at Interpublic Group of Cos.' McCann Erickson. Bob Seger's Like a Rock is so firmly identified with General Motors Corp.'s Chevrolet trucks that it would be hard to use it on behalf of someone else, ad executives say. Led Zeppelin's Rock and Roll has made a big splash for General Motors' Cadillac in recent years, and the specialists say it will be untouchable for some time. Other songs that have helped sell products over the years:

-- Cingular Wireless: Melissa, Allman Brothers Band.

-- HEINZ: Anticipation, Carly Simon.

-- Microsoft Corp. and Ford Motor Co.: Start Me Up, the Rolling Stones.

-- TARGET CORP.: Baby Got Back, Sir Mix-A-Lot.

-- Fidelity Investments: In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida, Iron Butterfly.

-- Circuit City Stores Inc.: Just What I Needed, the Cars.

-- Monster Worldwide Inc.: Do Ya, Electric Light Orchestra.

-- Kellogg Co.: Better Now, Collective Soul.

-- Coca-Cola Co.: I Want You to Want Me, Cheap Trick.

Network affiliates find cash in those news clips

You might not care that a student pilot in Idaho flipped his plane while landing and left himself with an injured hand and a cranky flying instructor. You might care even less to know that a local news station got film of the plane lying belly up in a field, and that the clip is now available online. But someone cares. And on the Internet these days, as long as someone cares, cash flows. In this case, the beneficiary is KTVX, an ABC affiliate in northern Utah owned by Clear Channel Communications. Until recently, the station was like other local broadcasters in that it had little use for its news clips aside from posting them on its Web site for a couple of days and then relegating them to the digital vault. Now a new online service, ClipSyndicate, is finding Web sites like AeroSpaceNews.com that are happy to show these reruns and share the advertising revenue that may follow.

Jim Cramer suggested these stocks on his CNBC show this week:

-- Carrizo Oil & Gas Inc. (CRZO): The Houston gas and oil company is worth buying because the price of natural gas relative to oil has fallen and the company will benefit from oil reserves at the Barnett Shale under Fort Worth, Texas.

-- WCI Communities Inc. (WCI): The builder of luxury homes has probably reached its lowest stock price and is a good long-term investment. Investors should look for "bottoms" or stocks that have hit a low are not likely to drop lower. Companies who report bad quarters and don't see a corresponding large drop in their stocks could be at bottoms.
