Work on Citrus Way is set to begin on Friday
BROOKSVILLE - Reconstruction of Citrus Way is expected to start Friday. The reconstruction work will include culvert crossings, driveways, railroad crossings, filling flood-prone areas, widening and repaving. The project is expected to take about nine months. For the majority of the project, the road will be closed to through-traffic and there will be brief delays in work areas. For information, call Hernando County Engineering at 754-4062. Financial service presents free workshop for seniors SPRING HILL - Transland Financial Services will present "Hot Topics for Seniors," a free educational workshop, 10 a.m. to noon on June 22 at Career Central, 7361 Forest Oaks Blvd. Speakers will include: Hernando County Commissioner Robert Schenck, who will discuss senior drug assistance programs and other issues relating to senior citizens. Chartered life underwriter and estate planner James Millsaps, who will discuss long-term care insurance policies and first-last to die insurance policies and their role with reverse mortgages. Elder law attorney Gregory Gay of Gay & Ehrhardt P.A., who will discuss wills, trusts and Medicaid reform relating to long-term care, and reverse mortgages. Lynette Ball of Transland Financial Services, who will discuss reverse mortgages, keeping one's assets and maintaining independence by creating a safety net. LifeSouth blood center in need of donations Tropical Storm Alberto forced the local LifeSouth Community Blood Center to cancel four blood drives. The result is the loss of donations of an expected 56 pints of blood. Due to this loss, along with the expected decrease in donations during summer months, donations of blood are in great need. LifeSouth requires an average of 230 pints of blood a day to supply the hospitals they serve in Florida. To donate blood, you must be at least 17, weigh at least 110 pounds and show a valid photo ID. The local LifeSouth center is at 12395 Cortez Blvd., Spring Hill. For information, call 596-2002. Get vessel checked out by Coast Guard Auxiliary The Hernando Beach U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers free vessel checks to Hernando County residents. Those interested can have a certified flotilla member come to their home, storage site or marina and review the required safety items. Those who meet all safety requirements will receive the Coast Guard's vessel safety decal. For information or to schedule a free vessel check, call 666-7239. Registration being taken for junior golf clinic BROOKSVILLE - The city's Parks and Recreation Department is accepting registration for the First Tee of Brooksville Junior Golf Clinic, which will be June 20 through July 27 at the Quarry Executive Golf Course, 800 John Gary Grubbs Blvd., off Broad Street. The clinic is open to ages 7 to 17 and is limited to the first 30 applicants in each level. The clinic will include Professional Golfers Association instruction. Clinic days and times include: Target (beginners), 9:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; Par (intermediate), 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays; and Birdie (advanced), 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays and 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays. The cost is $50, which includes the 2006 annual registration to the First Tee of Brooksville. For information or registration, call the Quarry at 544-5485. Head Start program accepting applications The Mid-Florida Community Services/Head Start Early Childhood Development Preschool Program in Hernando and Sumter counties is accepting enrollment applications for the 2006-07 school year. This is a federally funded, income-eligible program for children who will be 3 or 4 years old by Sept. 1. Head Start also serves children with special needs and disabilities. Applications are being accepted from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, or by appointment, at these locations: Moton Early Intervention Center, 835 School St., Brooksville. Call 754-2464.
