Black Caucus sponsors Juneteenth celebration

WESLEY CHAPEL - A celebration is planned this weekend to commemorate Juneteenth, or June 19, 1865, when word of emancipation reached slaves in Texas more than two years late.

The celebration, sponsored by the Black Caucus of Pasco County, kicks off at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Zephyr Park, 39800 Eighth Street, and will feature a choir, dancers, artists and guest speakers.

On Monday, a poetry workshop hosted by Elizabeth Straight will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Alice Hall Community Center in Zephyr Park. Monday's workshop, and a free meal, are free.

For more information, e-mail Blanche Benford at blackcaucuspasco@aol.com.
