RIVER RIDGE, La. - A theft suspect fleeing from police shot a deputy to death, wounded another, tied up a family and held an elderly man hostage for hours before surrendering Friday, officials said.

John Lee Cheek, 31, of Houston walked out of 81-year-old Cliff Lala's home after about 30 minutes of negotiations, said Col. John Fortunato of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. Lala was unharmed.

Cheek's arrest followed a pursuit through suburban New Orleans.

Authorities say sheriff's Capt. Octavio Gonzalez was killed when he saw Cheek trying to steal a vehicle.

The twins were born facing each other and joined from the lower chest to the pelvis. They were separated in a surgery that began Wednesday morning and ended before dawn Thursday.

Man found with severed head asked cops to kill him

BOISE, Idaho - A man pleaded with police to kill him after his wife's severed head was tossed from his pickup as he drove into an oncoming car, killing two people, prosecutors said Friday.

Alofa Time, 50, who was not seriously injured in Thursday's wreck, was carrying a suicide note, officials said.

Time was charged with first degree-murder in the decapitation death of his estranged wife, 47-year-old Theresa Time. Her headless body was found at her home.
