The travel equation

Travel is a game of numbers. There are train times and flight schedules to remember, not to mention your hotel room (was it 236 or 632?) and on which floor in long-term parking you left your car.
Plus, you need to know: how many tickets to buy, how many bags to take and, always a quandary, how many pairs of underwear to pack. And most important, how much money you can spend.
Lately, we’ve noticed how numbers are No. 1 on the covers of travel magazines and newsletters. In any given month, they promise the 10 best hotels, the 20 best fares or 100 or more great places to eat and shop.
The number 10, so even and appropriate, almost seems skimpy with some publications offering more than 1,000 ways (in one issue!) to travel better. They quantify travel with such ease.
All of these numbers, we hope, add up to one good vacation. Here’s a collection of (what else?) 10 of our favorite recent numeric-centric covers.
“5 Vacations for Desperate Housewives,” Travelgirl, May/June.“
5 Best All-Mountain Bikes,” Mountain Bike, July.
“Bonus! Nine Clever Ways Other People Travel for Free,” Budget Travel, April. (Bonus! Another numeric gem: “America’s Top 10 Coolest Small Towns: So You’ll Want to Move.”)
“Insiders Montreal: 28 Picks — Best of the City,” National Geographic Traveler, May/June.
“10 Great American Road Trips,” Men’s Journal, July.
“The 10 Best Los Angeles Restaurants,” TravelSmart newsletter, May 15.
“The West’s Best Campgrounds: 43 Must-See Sites to Help You Plan Your Next National Park Visit,” Sunset, May.
“35 Things to Do This Summer,” Yankee Magazine Travel Guide to New England, Spring/Summer. (And more! “All-New Editors’ Choice: 300+ Shopping, Dining, Lodging, Events and Entertainment.”)
“London, Rome, New York and More! 101 Splurges under $100,” Budget Travel, June.
“24 Hours in Rio,” “Top 100 Golf Resorts: Reader’s Poll,” “Affordable Villa Vacations: 1,000+ Dream Rentals in Italy, Hawaii, the Caribbean, France, Greece, Mexico and More” Conde Nast Traveler, June.
